I am so proud of the UNT Dallas Psychology Department’s research lab (Dr. Mario Casa de Calvo, Kitzia Moreno, Ana Alvarenga, Shimul Sarker, and Taylor Russo) for the work they completed and presented at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology 2018 conference in Atlanta. Way to go, guys!

Title: Skeletal Cities & Disregarded Habitats: The Effects of Urban Decay on Death Anxiety

Abstract: This study examined whether urban decay negatively impacts psychological well-being. Participants viewing a photograph of a decaying staircase experienced higher death anxiety than those viewing a photograph of a typical staircase. This suggests that decaying infrastructures produce existential anxiety. Understanding urban decay may engender a more holistic perspective on mental health concerns.
