Supply Chain Risk & Resilience

The UNTD Faculty Speaker Series featured a discussion on the risk and resiliency of supply chains by Dr. Subhro Mitra, Associate Professor in the School of Business. I learned a great deal about statical means of predicting disruptions in supply chains, and how interruptions can derail the entire market. It was a fascinating and timely discussion, especially considering the current health crisis in China, one of our main manufacturing suppliers.

Abstract

Global and drawn-out supply chains are being exposed to various disruptive events which have a big impact on the companies supply chain. Efficient and rapid return to normality is critical in the aftermath of an emergency event. The impacts of supply chain disruption, which includes shipment delays, increase in product cost, customer dissatisfaction and decrease in service level, can be reduced if there is a better understanding of the type of disrupting events, their probability of occurrence, and their impact on the supply chain. Simulation model can be built to estimating resilience of supply chain networks. This model can be improved if researches can incorporate the updated probability of risk for various events associated with supply chain operation. In this project, Bayesian network is used to estimate the updated risk probability, and framework is developed seamlessly connect the input from various source in to the risk probability estimation model, and finally to the simulation model to estimate resilience of the supply chain network.

Starbucks

Starbucks is finally here! UNT-Dallas has arrived, it is Starbucks official. I’m in heaven. The design is beautiful and spacious, and very relaxing.

Experiential Learning Fair

The Spring 2020 Experiential Learning Fair was a huge success! UNT Dallas students were able to meet with community partners seeking students interested in gaining work experience, internships, or community outreach opportunities. Events like this provide students with opportunities to complete internships, service learning, and volunteer hours. UNT Dallas is fortunate to have so many wonderful community partners!

Mean Girls

The Psychology of Women end-of-year movie: Mean Girls (2004)! A classic, and a nice way to end the semester.

The Winter Talent Show

Movie Night: The Box

The Psychology Club’s movie night involved a critique of The Box (2009). We discussed themes of power, dependency, morality, social influence, and even monetary inflation. It was also fun discussing gender roles in the 1970s. Thanks to all of the members who braved the weather to attend on a cold and rainy evening… perfect for a tense and eerie movie like this one.

Ofrenda

This Ofrenda was on display at the UNT-Dallas International & Multicultural Day event. This annual event collects and celebrates artifacts (books, flags, fun facts, music, clothing, and objects) from various cultures. Students of all majors host tables with information on different countries and cultures from around the world. Best of all, international food, music, and a talent and fashion show is provided in the evening. It is a fun and educational experience!

Trunk-or-Treat

This year’s trunk-or-treat event was moved indoors due to weather, but we still had fun. Unicorn Islander was a hit! Happy Halloween!

LatinX Hip Hop

One of the perks of higher education is the ability to learn from your peers. Today I learned about the importance of studying LatinX Hip Hop from Dr. Robert Tinajero, Assistant Professor of English and Communication at UNT Dallas. Great food was served and music was performed by LowBrow Collective, a Cumbia group focusing on Peruvian and Latin American sounds. It was a great event!

Title: Why Studying LatinX Hip Hop Matters

Abstract: The field of rhetorical studies has historically focused mostly on what Patricia Bizzell calls the “traditional tradition” of rhetoric. This “traditional tradition” includes icons such as Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, and Quintilian, just to name a few. In the West, it also has focused mostly on White, male rhetoricians and topics such as politics and philosophy while focusing heavily on prose writing and speech giving. In this talk, I will argue that the rhetoric of LatinX Hip Hop is an important one to study in modern American society because it helps shift the terrain of rhetorical studies and teaches us about the LatinX community. The analysis will focus on the multi-dimensional nature of LatinX Hip Hop rhetoric, code switching, and respectful collaboration.

Cool conference swag, black matte journal.

Careers in Psychology

The Psychology Club was fortunate enough to have two guest speakers for the careers in psychology talk. City Year shared a tremendous program for recent graduates, including many amazing funding/stipend/scholarship opportunities through the program. We also had the pleasure of hearing from UNTD’s own Dr. Jessica Cintron. She is a passionate counselor with many valuable lessons to share with undergraduates who may be struggling to figure out their purpose and professional direction. She is one of the most genuine and caring colleagues one could hope for. She shared the following QR code for any students seeking additional careers resources. She is also currently the instructor for a UNTD careers in psychology course. Below is the contact information for City Year and Dr. Cintron, in case you’d like to receive more information.
